A socket wrench fits over a nut. Its cylindrical socket is similar in function to a closed‑end wrench.
Typical applications
- Sockets can reach nuts in recessed holes inaccessible to open-ended or closed-ended wrenches.
Advantages
- A ratchet handle allows repeated turning in one direction without removing the socket from the nut. Not every socket handle is a ratchet.
Specifications to check
- Select the correct wrench type and size for the fastener. Do not treat metric and SAE fastener sizes as interchangeable.
Limitations
- Do not use a wrench on moving machinery. Do not add a pipe to a wrench handle for extra leverage.
Buying considerations
Before selecting a socket wrench, check for damage. When socket extensions are used, support the head of a ratchet wrench.
Safety & limits
- Use eye protection where flying particles or falling debris are a hazard. Wear safety glasses or goggles beneath any face shield.
