The right tools. The right projects.Practical guidance for everyday DIY

Behind the toolbox

Hi, I’m Daniel

I’m based in Sweden, and I love tools, solving practical problems and finding out whether I can fix something myself.

Most of my working life has been in factories and the concrete industry. My interest in DIY really started about ten years ago, when my landlord wanted to charge me around $500 to repair a small hole my kids had made in the living-room wall and repaint the room.

The solutions I found online seemed expensive, so I asked friends who worked in the trades. With their advice, I managed to fix it fairly easily and for much less. That experience taught me something worth sharing: being inexperienced doesn’t mean a small repair has to be beyond you.

Learning along the way

Since then, I’ve tackled other repairs, including small plumbing jobs. Two young daughters who thought cutting their Barbies’ hair and washing it down the drain was great entertainment gave me some extra practice.

I’ve made mistakes, too—including damaging a rubber seal or two at pipe connections. Understanding the parts and knowing when to stop are part of learning. Some jobs are manageable yourself; others need a professional.

A tool enthusiast with a tight wallet

I’m especially fond of power tools. I’m also a bit of a cheapskate, so for a while I bought almost exclusively off-brand machines. Some served me well; others taught me how much quality can vary.

There’s a place for inexpensive tools, particularly for occasional use. A well-made tool suited to the job can make life easier, though, and sometimes spending more makes sense.

Then there are the times when I simply want another power tool. That doesn’t mean I need it.

That’s the balance I want FixerToolbox to reflect: buy what helps, borrow when it makes sense, and don’t overlook the tools you already have.

Why FixerToolbox?

Honestly, the idea of making a website just popped into my head. I wanted to see whether I could do it, and DIY felt like a natural subject.

I’m also a fully fledged nerd: I use 3D printers, work with CAD and experiment with AI—including a model running locally on my own computer. Building this site brings those interests together.

Most of what I read is in English, so writing in English felt natural. It also means I can share the site beyond Sweden. Wherever you live, I hope you find something useful here.

The personal stories and opinions are mine. I use GPT-based AI tools to help organise my writing and assist with research. AI can make mistakes, so its answers need checking against reliable sources. My own experience and guidance drawn from research are not the same thing, and I aim to make that distinction clear.

FixerToolbox is where I share what I’ve learned and keep learning. If it helps you understand a job, avoid an unnecessary purchase or tackle a small repair, it’s doing what I hoped it would.

How to use our guides

Guides are educational and do not replace the instructions for your actual tools and materials or professional judgment. Electrical, gas, structural and hazardous-material work requires appropriate expertise. Experience with a tool type does not mean every model has been tested; source references describe research, not hands-on test results.
