Hex driver Guide

Understand the purpose, selection considerations and limits of a hex driver.

A hex driver is a straight hexagonal driver with a screwdriver-style handle. It fits a recessed hexagonal screw-head hole.

Typical applications

  • Hex drivers fit inside recessed hexagonal screw heads rather than around an external nut or bolt.

Advantages

  • A hex driver offers a screwdriver-style handle, while an L-shaped hex key has a bent metal shaft. Both engage recessed hexagonal holes.

Specifications to check

  • Match the driver to the fastener size. Metric and SAE sizes are distinct size systems, not automatically interchangeable.

Limitations

  • Do not use a hex driver on moving machinery. Do not extend its handle with a pipe for extra leverage.

Buying considerations

Select the correct type and size for the fastener. Do not use a damaged wrench or one with a bent handle.

Safety & limits

  • Use eye protection where flying particles or falling debris are a hazard. A face shield must be worn with safety glasses or goggles.
