A framing square is a layout tool for checking right angles and marking work. Its two legs meet at a right angle.
Where it fits
- A generic framing square is used in framing, layout, rafter and stair work. Knowing these uses does not provide a structural design or a complete stair-building method.
Markings to compare
- Some framing squares include rafter, brace and board-foot tables as well as length graduations. Check the markings on the selected square; these tables are not universal.
Size and units
- When selecting a generic framing square, compare the leg dimensions and the actual scale units. A square marked in inches is not a metric scale; choose readable graduations for the measurements in your plan.
Checking work
- A carpenter square can check whether adjacent surfaces meet squarely by observing gaps between the square and work. This checks that contact, not the load capacity of a structure.
